Contemporary Art Museum Raleigh: Ornament and Pattern Response

In the text, it shows that pattern and ornament is important in our everyday lives neurologically, philosophically, and through formative language. We are hard wired to perceive pattern to make sense of random stimuli. We demand more from existence other than survival so when the recognize relationships between things, we interpret what we see and add other layers of meaning almost like adding layers of ornament. Contemporary artists use pattern to tell stories. The way pattern is important to me is in my daily routine which is like a pattern. Everyday I wake up at a certain time and if I don’t, the pattern gets thrown off which could throw off some parts of my day.

What I didn’t know was that ornament was looked at as less than in the 16th century. For me, I always thought it was looked at as an upper class art. Also that since technology was made, we had two eras: modernism and post-modernism. Modernism was more abstract and simple while post-modernism was more like using technology to redefine what was made before to fit the current era. Lastly, I found that Kit-of-Parts was the most intriguing approach ornament and pattern. It is like a collaboration between you and the artist that mad the kit.
